A Good Love Story Never Ends?

Life insurance is not for you. It’s for the ones you love. Typical American: Home, cars, children, maybe spouses, education. These things are all going to feel the pangs of your absence in many ways. But, whether we want to talk about it or not, the financial picture always changes when you pull someone’s contribution out of the mix. And the age-old story always is, the kids usually feel the pangs of our actions, or the lack thereof.

So, be responsible. Even if you are single and even if you have no children, this would clean up any debt that you may have. Life insurance has many purposes. Life insurance can be used on an individual basis to care for your family. It can be used for estate planning (most wealthy people are heavily invested in life insurance which continues their legacy). It can be used by business owners to protect not only their individual family and the business for the sake of the employees, but particularly in a buy-sell arrangement.

I own a business by myself and I have employees. I die and what happens to the employees and all their families when the business fails. In this scenario, life insurance would allow that business to remain viable until future determination has been made. If I am a partner in a business venture, each of us should have substantial life insurance to fill our shoes for the sake of the partnership and the business in the event of our death. Succession planning always includes life insurance. There are many ways to use these tools and it’s essential, as a part of our insurance package, to have all facets covered proportionately to our needs and our ability to pay.

I am providing a couple videos from Life Happens which is a non-profit organization used by many independent agents as a source of information to share. Please take time to look at this and give me a call for a free assessment of all your needs. I am also providing you a short video on how to determine how much is enough.

More Than Two-Thirds of Americans Are Not Prepared For A Disability

The average long-term disability is nearly 3 years. One in 5 adults experience a long-term disability and the majority are ill-prepared to cover the expenses if they are unable to work.

Stop and think about it. After you watch this one minute video.

The paycheck that we work so hard to get and is so competitive, we do not insure. This is our lifeline and we have neglected to protect it? How many things are based on our income? So, get your expense sheet out and look at  what you would you do without: Your home? Your kid’s education? Groceries? You name it.

Even if your income was partially impaired, say 50%, would this make a change for everybody under your roof that’s dependent upon your income. If you lost your job, it would be catastrophic and that would always be someone else’s fault. If we had a serious illness or injury that prevented us from doing our job and we hadn’t prepared for it, this is worse. Because it’s not like you can go and find a new employer. Think about this. It’s extremely important that you think about this. The cost for this type of insurance has been described as 1 – 2% of your income. We spend more than that and never give it a thought. On items that have no significance. Please call me for a free consultation.

Voluntary Benefits Are Gaining Popularity Across the Country, With the Midwest in the Lead

Data shows that voluntary benefits have gained popularity across the country as more employees take on the financial responsibility for their health care through high deductible plans. The Midwest is leading the pack in HDHP (high deductible health plans) and voluntary benefits. 67% of employers in the Midwest offer HDHPs and more than 42% of the employees are electing these plans. This speaks for itself. It works.

What this combination does for the employee is this: The whole mentality for carrying health insurance is to get well and stay well. And protect yourself from the financial loss of a serious illness or a serious injury. The gap in these two scenarios is what I call our small illnesses and injuries such as seasonal sinus infections, slip/fall, things of this nature.

Those items, when you carry a high deductible plan, become yours to pay. Here’s how to manage your dollars in that “gap”: First, please take advantage of the FREE preventive and wellness exams including, your screenings, once each calendar year. This creates a baseline for the providers to better serve you going forward and it also creates an awareness of where you are with your general health. You can feel like a million dollars and still have an issue. By educating yourself and being responsible, a lot of things that happen to us can be prevented and/or managed, saving us dollars.

An HSA account (health savings account) allows one to make a tax-deductible contribution to an HSA account each year. So, for all your healthy years, you are taking care of your health through your preventive measure, saving some money for the “what-ifs” and enjoying a tax deduction at the same time. When you have something happen to you that is substantial in the way of an illness, you will be able to take care of this gap. This lowers your premium. By lowering your premium on the health insurance, it allows you to consider disability income, life insurance, and other ancillary coverages, that may otherwise be out of the question.

There has been a 138% increase in participation in HAS accounts in the Midwest. The highest average employee contribution in the country. Congratulations.

ACA insurer participation declines

As I read through many publications available to me as an independent broker in the insurance industry and as a member of many industry-related associations, I have come across some information known to the industry, but may not be known or understood by someone not in my industry.

ACA insurer participation declined by 24% in 2017. What does that mean to you? On a nationwide basis, a quarter of the insurance companies have declined to participate in the Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplace. When we look at Iowa, and we get upset and concerned about companies exiting the market, let it be known: there’s no bad guys here, it’s the nature of the industry’s response to the ACA. It merely is unaffordable. The intentions in the beginning were to ensure all people lower insurance costs, keep your own doctor, etc.

Approaching 8 years into this law, it has played out to be 180 degrees the opposite direction. The horrendous double digit increases in premiums and the reserves held by these companies (reserves are dictated by the governing authorities, whether that be federal or state) is still not substantial enough to offset the losses and remain solvent. For the betterment of millions, the companies are doing what they feel is the responsible thing to do for the betterment of everybody.

1 in 3 Millennials has turned down a job in part because of poor insurance offerings.

Many employers are focusing on the benefit offerings as well as competitive salaries to attract and retain quality employees. Small business is not mandated to provide anything now. However, I have encouraged small business owners to find room in the budget to offer their employees quality health insurance. I take into consideration the least compensated person and the highest compensated person when making my recommendations so as not to leave anybody out. Different ages will also dictate different needs, wants and ability to pay.

After a comprehensive review, I come back to the small business employer with a recommendation. I have been met with a 98% positive response. This ensures the employer is going to be sustainable as a small business by taking care of the people who make the business happen. If the employees are productive and happy, the Client-base will grow. It’s a win-win for everybody. Please give me a call, my consultations are free.

You Need to Know What’s Next

The insurance industry, business owners, leaders and health care providers need to know about the future of health care in Iowa. All have been faced with the changes and complexities of the  Affordable Care Act over the past seven years and the only thing that I can assure you is that the uncertainty continues.

Employer based health care insurance in the U.S. is how millions receive coverage and we see this as remaining the same going forward. With this being the case, employers are encouraged to manage this risk like they manage other risks that they have. We provide strategies for the cost-sharing of the members and tools that will help them become better custodians of their health care dollars and wellness options. Iowa employers will find that in an effort to become more competitive they will want to review their compensation package and offerings with health care as a major component. This is crucial to attract and retain quality employees.

With health care and health care insurance increasing at an unprecedented rate, it is difficult for businesses to afford benefits. As the industry continues to work to reduce excess waste out of the system, consumers need to become better stewards of their health and be more conscientious consumers.

Providers have databases that track patients’ lab results, confirm scheduled appointments, and encourage timely screenings and immunizations. The patients also have a responsibility and that is to adhere to the recommendations and treatment plans that the doctors provide. We will also provide information on health coaches that will work hand in hand with the patient to attain the outcomes and goals that they are seeking. This will result in a decreased use of medical services, pharmacy products and overall costs. The real advantage would be that you are healthier and feel
better. We can start by eating well and exercising, such as a walk every day.

If you are an employer, please feel free to ask me questions. All options are identified. I can assist you in making the prudent choices for your business and your employees.

I encourage individuals that will be affected by the loss of coverage on Dec. 31, 2017 to see me for recommendations.

As an experienced, independent agent I feel a tremendous obligation to help our fellow Iowans with free consultations. I pride myself in looking at a person’s entire situation; age, health, pharmacy needs, employment status, household income, etc., to find any and all options for consideration.

As we go through the free assessment process, we learn about choices and the pros and cons of each. They include employment options and benefits, as well as self-employment opportunities and possibilities for benefits. We also learn how we can manage health and pharmacy issues in a different or better way.

At the end of our assessment, we find a way to help most of the people that cross our desk. I recommend good independent, unbiased sources of quality information. I continually provide timely articles well worth your time. We also have lists of persons from difference industries that could be a tremendous help to your health and your finances.

As we go into the third quarter of the year, it is a very good time to schedule a consultation. This will give you ample time to consider your options in a timely enough manner for a seamless transition. Planning is the key to a best outcome. I see fourth quarter as being an unusually busy time of the year with the recent changes.

Whether you are an individual or a business owner/leader, please call us for an appointment. We will help you research different solutions to your health insurance strategy.

This weekend Wellmark issued an opinion editorial to major media across Iowa to outline the three principles necessary to re-enter the individual Affordable Care Act (ACA) market.
It is important that we provide you with timely and pertinent information as the health insurance environment transforms and changes. This press release from Wellmark’s CEO, John Forsyth, explains the impact the ACA has had and what they feel is a solution.
We are here to assist anyone with questions and solutions.  Please give us a call.  As new information becomes available, please know we will keep you informed.

Men’s Health Week!

June 12 – 18 is recognized as Men’s Health Week.

The men in our lives sometimes get so busy providing for all of us that they neglect their own health because they “feel good” and are not hurt. However, there are free preventive wellness exams each calendar year with your health insurance plans.

In these wellness exams, any and all screenings appropriate for age and gender can be performed and paid for at 100%. What one accomplishes by taking advantage of this is helping yourself. You are actually getting paid to help yourself.

Helping ourselves is a huge roll and responsibility in our entire medical profile. Please go drop this valuable information in your medical file so that if you get sick or you get hurt going forward, your medical professionals can see what is your “normal”.

The other advantage that you have is being able to set some personal goals for yourself. As an example, if you want to work on weight, blood pressure, glucose readings (diabetes), etc., you can learn what the normal range is, where you’re at with it and take preventive steps to pull yourself back in line.

We do routine maintenance on our homes and our cars, but sometimes we don’t put ourselves on the to-do list. I am providing a couple links for your convenience that you might find of interest.

JD Power 2017 Member Health Plan Study

There have been many studies done on member satisfaction with their health insurance as a piece of the ongoing and intricate puzzle of our health care system.

JD Power has released a member plan study that shows some of the most important things to the consumer.

One of the things that we feel is essential for anybody that entrusts us with their money and their health care coverage is that they have someone they can talk to that can put the insurance jargon in terms that makes sense that applies to their personal situations.

Whether you are an individual or a business owner, when it comes to our health and our money, the questions can look very similar. The coverages, however, are different.

At Sears Insurance, we pride ourselves on integrity, honesty and just being there when you need us the most. As our national health insurance reform continues to take shape, consumers need an agent more now than ever. There is a huge difference between buying your coverage from a big box insurance brokerage and an independent agent. Sometimes the price tags determined by the State Insurance Department and the Insurance carriers are the same, but the values are miles apart.

Please call us for your free one-on-one consultation to identify your options.

Retirement Planning and Your Insurance

I have many situations that have crossed my desk in the course of 40 years helping people with all of their insurance needs, whether starting out or retiring.

I am going to give you my “Client of the Week” as my first scenario:

An Iowa State Trooper has proudly served for over 30 years and retired at age 60. His pension and 401k are in place. This man has been very responsible. The asset-to-debt ratio is fabulous. And his investments are allocated very conservatively so that he cannot lose his principal. He has worked his entire career to create a safe and happy secure retirement. He still has his health and is ready to enjoy the fruits of his labor. His wife is a registered nurse and has worked an approximate 30 years. They have raised and educated 4 children and she’s really looking forward to some time together, enjoying peace, quiet and some leisurely travel.

Now, they are both retired. Oh, my, we have one problem: health insurance. They are not on an employer group anymore. COBRA benefits are exhausted. They are not self-employed and they have 5 years to be Medicare eligible.

This is an example of two very responsible, credible people that would have benefited from retirement planning. There are many ways these circumstances can be dealt with if a person provides themselves with some lead time by working with a seasoned agent. Appointments are pending.

Scenario B: 4-Generation Century Farm

Generation 2 is retiring, but our good Iowa farmers will always have a hand in their farming operations, which is very valuable experience to Generation 3.

Generation 3 includes four children. One of the four children has farmed his entire life and is married with a family. As mom and dad prepare for “retirement”, they need to take into consideration their health insurance, which will be ending December 31, disability income, long-term care (which could eat the family estate by the time they’re both through this phase of their life) and life insurance is not in place to cover the equity owed the other three siblings and estate taxation and holding costs until such is resolved. At this same time, Generation 3 is also faced with educating his children who are about to start college. Do you get the picture?

In a case like this, my recommendation is to bring all parties to the table. We start with the son that will be the “Principle” of this farming operation for an overview of the needs. Once we identify the needs and create some suggested solutions for their consideration, it’s very prudent to bring in their trusted attorney (estate planning documents such as trusts, wills, durable power of attorney, general power of attorney, etc.) and CPA (tax strategies and financial planning) to shed light on what direction they should be heading. When we are all on the same page, then it’s time to get proper insurances and annuities in place.

We are here to help. We have saved many farms and in the process, have seen a lot of siblings that could have been torn apart, still be best friends. I have no plans of retiring. This is a very rewarding process for me. Please call me for a consultation.

It’s Time for a Break!

We will all have family in town, graduations, parties, Memorial Day and all the fun things to do outside. This is also a great opportunity to visit with family that you may not get to see daily or you may not have the opportunity speak to at any length about “family business matters”.

Please read my posts throughout this month and when appropriate, as your family when everybody can get together for a discussion. In the meantime, we are sharing with you the Catch Des Moines link for all of the things to do, events, restaurants, deals and discounts, in our great city!
